Just as with upper eyelids, an excess of skin can also occur on the lower eyelid. So-called lachrymal sacs are mostly caused by a genetically determined weakness of the connective tissue or, under certain circumstances, stress and lack of sleep, smoking or excessive alcohol consumption. Because of the slack tissue, the eyes often look tired and the affected person appears tense. To regain a radiant look, a lower eyelid lift can help.

Implementation of a lower eyelid lift

The lower eyelid lifting is one of the more demanding procedures and is usually performed from the inside and outside. This means that the doctor makes an incision at the lower lid edge, removing the fatty tissue and tightening the skin under the eye to such an extent that only the natural eyelid wrinkles remain. An overtightening is excluded by exact measurement. If the patient also suffers from dark circles under the eyes, the fat thus obtained can be used for padding. In some cases, it may be sufficient to remove only the fatty tissue instead of the excess skin, in which case the incision is made on the inside of the lower eyelid. In our practice in Hamburg, we perform the procedure under local, twilight sleep or general anesthesia, if desired, and usually takes 1-2 hours. Before the procedure, an ophthalmologist should rule out damage to the retina and the fundus of the eye.

Aftercare of a lower eyelid lift

Usually the cuts heal very quickly, but heavy and regular tobacco consumption can have a negative influence on the healing process. For this reason, smokers should stop smoking 2 weeks before the procedure. As painkillers containing acetylsalicylic acid (such as aspirin) delay blood clotting, they should be avoided 10 days before the eyelid lift. If there are allergies to disinfectants, detergents, plasters, medications or ointments, the patient should inform the treating physician. After the procedure, slight swelling may occur, but this will disappear after 2 to 3 days. It is advisable to cover the eye area regularly with moist cool compresses. For the first few days after eyelid lift, the patient should sleep with a slightly raised upper body and avoid physical exertion, so that the swelling is quickly minimized. The stitches are removed after approx. 5 – 7 days, after which neither make-up nor cream should be applied for approx. one week. For 4 weeks you should refrain from going to the solarium and sunbathing.

A lower eyelid correction can of course also be carried out together with an upper eyelid correction.

Frequent questions regarding a lower eyelid lift

How do I behave after the eyelid lift?

immediately after the operation, cool the eye area sufficiently.

For the first three days after a lower eyelid correction, you should sleep with a raised headboard, use a second pillow if necessary.

For 1 week, avoid alcohol and do not smoke, as this can cause swelling of the eyelids. For patients earing contact lenses: wear glasses to avoid infection and irritation.

Do not exercise or wear make-up for 2 weeks.

4 weeks no long stays in the sun, solarium, sauna or steam bath. Also take care to protect your eyes from direct sunlight.

Will there be swelling or bruising?

Swelling and bruising may occur after the operation, but these usually subside within a week

Is there severe pain?

A slight scar pain after a lower eyelid correction is completely normal and can be treated very well with painkillers. However, these should only be taken after consultation with your treating doctor. In particular, we advise against taking the anticoagulant aspirin.

Will a scar be visible?

The scar runs along the lower lash line and is therefore hardly visible. In addition, the scar can be treated with a scar ointment after the stitches have been removed.
